Overview

Allen is a Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator with over 20 years’ experience in fire suppression. He is a former captain qualified fire investigator with the City of Edmonton fire rescue services investigations branch and has performed over 300 investigations including fatalities, large structures, arson fires, vehicle and machinery fires. He is currently a member of the NAFI, FIAA and IAFF.

Former Captain Qualified Fire Investigator with the City of Edmonton Fire Rescue Services Investigations Branch. Joined the Edmonton Fire Rescue Services in 2004 working as a fire fighter on the suppression side. In May of 2016 joined the Edmonton Fire Investigations branch.

Duties and Responsibilities:
My primary duty as a Fire investigator with The City of Edmonton while working within the Alberta Safety Codes Act is to determine the Origin, Cause, and Circumstance of each fire/explosion I investigate, write up detailed reports and forward them off to the Provincial Fire Commissioners office.

Electrical Safety

  • A 3 hour tested training program provided by the (I.A.A.I) International Association of Arson Investigators on the Certified Fire Investigator Trainer website (CFITrainer.net).
  • This course provided critical electrical safety practices that a fire investigator should implement at fire scenes.
  • Includes how electricity is supplied to a building, the electrical safety actions to complete during the preliminary scene assessment, on going electrical safety measures to be practiced throughout the investigation,what the investigator needs to know about static electricity, and what electrical safety equipment should be in the investigator’s toolkit.

  • This course taught the basics of the electrical power generation,distribution, and transmission system.

Basic Electricity

  • This course introduced the basic electrical concepts, including:terminology, atomic theory and electricity, Ohms Law, Jules Law, AC and DC power.
  • This course showed the important relationship between resistance,current, and heat is fundamental to understanding how electricity can be a competent fire ignition source. Electricity can cause fires in many ways.A knowledge of basic electricity is essential to successfully investigate potential electrical ignition sources at a fire scene, test hypothesesinvolving electrical ignition sources, form a conclusion supported by evidence, and competently present methodology and conclusions in legal proceedings. This module provides the foundation of that basic electrical knowledge.

Digital Photography and the Fire Investigator

Introduction into Youth Set Fires

  • A 3 hour tested training program provided by the (I.A.A.I) InternationalAssociation of Arson Investigators on the Certified Fire InvestigatorTrainer website (CFITrainer.net).
  • This course provided the foundational background on the scope of theyouth set fire problem, the importance of rigorous fire investigation inaddressing this problem, and the roll of key agencies in the response to ayouth set fire. This course also presented the responsibility of the fireinvestigator when working with a youth set fire.
